“With the launch of the Roomba s9+ and Braava jet m6, iRobot has achieved another automation milestone for home robots.”
When I joined iRobot, it was all about robot autonomy, the focus of the company was to offload cleaning to robots. But, because the market for cleaning robots was being we needed to differentiate itself, I lead foundational research over 8 weeks to identify what we could innovate to continue to lead in our space.
Triggers, Tasks and Tools
8 weeks of design and research sprints identifying unarticulated needs. We started with generative research to uncover how folks thought about cleaning.
Triggers included seeing evidence of dirt, day of the week, or the end of a meal.
Tasks included how they thought about the task of cleaning. (Who knew that some people enjoy cleaning)
Tools helped us identify what they used to clean.
Each week we refined our research approach to continue to drive in-depth insights - we created various low fidelity scenes to help inform new features, card sorting
Key insights resulted in a fundamental shift in how we positioned the company, from robot autonomy to robot partnership.
